Google Pay has launched UPI Lite, a new feature that revolutionizes the way users make UPI transactions. With UPI Lite, users can now make fast and one-click UPI transactions without the need to enter their UPI PIN, enhancing the overall transaction process. This feature was introduced by the Reserve Bank of India in September 2022 and is enabled by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

One of the key advantages of UPI Lite is its ability to operate independently of the issuing bank’s core banking system. This ensures higher success rates even during peak transaction hours, promising a seamless experience for users.

Setting up UPI Lite on Google Pay

To get started with UPI Lite on Google Pay, follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the Google Pay app on your device.
  2. Tap on your profile picture located at the top right corner.
  3. Select “Pay PIN-free UPI Lite” from the options.
  4. Enter the amount you wish to add to your UPI Lite balance (up to INR 2,000).
  5. Confirm the transaction to complete the setup.

Once you have set up your UPI Lite balance, it becomes the default payment method for transactions of INR 200 or less.

Making Payments with UPI Lite

Making payments using UPI Lite is quick and convenient. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Open the Google Pay app on your device.
  2. Scan the QR code provided by the merchant or enter their phone number.
  3. Enter the amount you want to pay.
  4. Choose your UPI Lite account as the payment method.
  5. Confirm the payment to complete the transaction.

With UPI Lite, you can make payments of up to INR 200 each time, without the need for a UPI PIN, offering a hassle-free and efficient payment experience.

Supported Banks and Future Expansion

Currently, UPI Lite is supported by 15 banks, including AU Small Finance Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Indian Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, State Bank of India (SBI), South Indian Bank, and Union Bank of India. Google has announced that more banks will join the UPI Lite ecosystem in the coming months, expanding its reach to a wider user base.

UPI Lite not only simplifies the UPI transaction process but also provides a cleaner and less cluttered bank passbook, reducing the number of transaction details.
