Airtel 5G to Launch Soon After Spectrum Auctions, Prices Similar To 4G Plans

Airtel

According to an Airtel executive, the government’s spectrum auction will be completed soon, and the company will begin rolling out 5G services in India. On the sidelines of a physical event on Thursday, the company’s Chief Technical Officer (CTO) told 91Mobiles that the company plans to launch 5G services in India around 2-3 months after the spectrum auctions are completed. He was speaking at a demonstration of the telecom provider’s 5G network in Gurugram. Using the 3,500MHz band test spectrum allotted by the Department of Telecommunications, Airtel demonstrated an immersive video experience during the event (DoT).

Airtel CTO Randeep Sekhon told 91Mobiles that the company’s 5G services will be available in 2-4 months after the country’s spectrum auction is completed. “While this is not a race, we believe Airtel is well prepared to launch 5G following the spectrum auction,” said Sekhon. According to the Airtel executive, 5G plans in India are expected to be priced similarly to what users are currently paying for 4G plans.

At an event on Thursday, Airtel demonstrated the potential of its 5G network speeds. During the event, the company recreated the stadium experience of Kapil Dev’s 175-run innings in the 1983 Cricket World Cup, India’s first world cup victory. Airtel streamed a 4K video of the match to 50 users at the same time, with average speeds of 200mbps and latency of 20ms.

Airtel also demonstrated its 5G network live in Hyderabad in January of last year. In June, the company launched its 5G trial network in Gurugram, which will provide speeds of over 1Gbps during the testing phase. Last year, Airtel partnered with Qualcomm to expand its 5G network in India.
