Apple says iOS 16’s keyboard haptic could impact battery life: All you need to know

Apple has told iPhone users that turning on the new haptic keyboard feature in iOS 16 could shorten the battery life of their phones. The most recent iOS update will give you access to other features like Lock Screen customizations, iMessage enhancements, notification updates, and more, but it won’t give you access to the Dynamic Island. There are also some small changes, like turning on haptic feedback for your iPhone’s keyboard.

The new haptic keyboard may drain battery life on the iPhone

The new haptic keyboard, which was released alongside iOS 16 on September 12th, causes the iPhone’s Taptic Engine to vibrate slightly, ever so slightly, when a button on the on-screen keyboard is pressed. Apple, on the other hand, warns that vibrations use up power and may shorten the life of your battery.

It probably comes as no surprise, but there is a small disclaimer at the bottom of Apple’s public support document showing how to enable haptics and sounds for the iPhone’s keyboard that states, “Turning on keyboard haptics may affect the battery life of your iPhone.” I believe this is generally expected, correct? Increased use of Apple’s Taptic Engine, the device that generates vibrating effects for your phone, will most likely have an effect on the battery. Of course, Apple cannot provide an exact number for battery depletion, but let’s just say that the more haptics you use, the more likely you will feel the impact.

If you want to save battery life, you can simply disable the feature. If you’ve been using an iPhone up until now, you’re simply reverting to your previous habits before the iOS 16 update. Of course, there is always the possibility that Apple will improve the battery life on the iPhone, allowing you to experiment with the haptic keyboard once more.
