Every year in September, GoPro updates its action camera lineup, and 2022 is no exception. The GoPro Hero 11 Black and Hero 11 Black Mini, the company’s latest action cameras, were released yesterday globally (as well as in India). So, let’s take a look at the new Hero 11 Black camera lineup.
GoPro Hero 11 Black: Features
Starting with the design, not much has changed, and the GoPro Hero 11 Black still has dual screens, one on the front and one on the back to serve as the viewfinder. The camera sensor is what’s new here. The Hero 11 Black now has a larger 1/1.9-inch sensor, allowing you to take 27MP photos (up from 23MP on the Hero 10 Black). Not only that, but the sensor captures content at 5.3K in an 8:7 aspect ratio, the largest FOV ever on a GoPro camera. If you capture videos in this aspect ratio, you can now edit them to a different aspect ratio on the fly using the company’s Quik app. Because of the larger new sensor, the Hero 11 Black can capture photos and videos in 10-bit colour, which is incredible.
Before we get into some of the cool new features, the maximum resolution that a Hero 11 Black can capture is 5.3K @ 60FPS and 4K @ 120FPS. Both resolutions support the company’s SuperView mode (widest FOV). However, the camera now includes a better version of this feature called HyperView, which takes the entire 8:7 sensor readout and converts it to a 16:9 output. If you like GoPro’s HyperSmooth stabilisation feature, this is an improved 5th-generation iteration of the same. This is combined with a 360-degree horizon lock feature that works at speeds of up to 5.3K at 30FPS. It aids in keeping the subject level in relation to a specific horizon point.
There are no significant changes under the hood. The GoPro Hero 11 Pro uses the same GP2 processor as its predecessor from the previous year. However, the standard battery has been replaced by a removable 1,720mAh Li-ion Enduro battery. Previously, the Enduro battery was available as an accessory. The larger battery is accompanied by two video shooting modes: Highest Quality (no battery or quality compromises) and Extended Battery (lower resolution and frame rate to increase capture length). In addition, the company is releasing a Hero 11 Black Creator’s Edition Kit that will allow you to convert your camera into a vlogging rig. The Hero 11 Black is the main part of this bundle, which also includes the Volta extended battery grip, the Media Mod with a directional mic, and the Light Mod.

GoPro Hero 11 Black Mini: Features
Yes, as the name and images suggest, there is now a new “mini” version of the GoPro Hero camera, which serves as a sort of long-awaited successor to the Session camera. The Hero 11 Black Mini measures 52.4 x 51.2 x 38mm, which is larger than the Session. Furthermore, the camera is pocketable and only weighs 133 grammes. The dual mounting fingers on the Hero 11 Black Mini are unmistakable. What does this mean for users of GoPro cameras? You’ll now have mounting fingers on the rear and back, allowing you to easily mount this camera on additional items such as helmets, bodysuits, and within cars. This increases the versatility of the Hero 11 Mini’s arsenal.
Next, it’s difficult to overlook the fact that the Hero 11 Mini lacks any touch displays, neither front nor back. Only a small display at the top, next to the shutter button, displays the video capture mode, battery life, and other useful information. On the front, next to the camera lens, there is a pairing button. In terms of the camera sensor and internals, enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that the Hero 11 Black Mini has the same 24.7MP sensor and 5.3K/60FPS video recording capabilities as the standard model. The GP2 processor, live streaming in 1080p, waterproofing up to 10m, and the Max camera mod have all stayed the same. In comparison to the standard model, the Mini has a non-removable 1,500mAh Enduro Li-ion battery. To charge the camera, you must plug it in.
