Qualcomm launched Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and W5 Gen 1 Platforms: All you need to know

Qualcomm unveiled its latest wearable platforms, the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5 Gen 1, on Tuesday.

Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon W5+ platform uses 50% less power, works twice as fast, and has 30% more features than the previous generation, all while being 30% smaller. Furthermore, the newly released Snapdragon wearable platforms are built on a hybrid architecture. They each have a 4nm SoC and a 22nm highly integrated always-on co-processor. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 platforms both support the ultra-low-power Bluetooth 5.3 architecture.

Oppo and Mobivoi are the first companies to announce new smartwatches based on the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 platforms. The Oppo Watch 3 series, which is expected to be released in August, will be the first model. The next-generation TicWatch flagship smartwatch from Mobvoi will be available later this year. According to Oppo, the Watch 3 series was created in close collaboration with Qualcomm.

The Qualcomm W5+ Gen 1 and W5 Gen 1 platforms for wearables are marketed as the company’s most significant advancements in the market, meeting the demands of modern consumers. They also add more Deep Sleep and Hibernate states and low-power “islands” for the Wi-Fi, location, and audio subsystems to make the battery last longer.

Additionally, Qualcomm Technologies unveiled two reference designs from Compal and Pegatron that show off the platform’s potential and the company’s cooperation with ecosystem partners. The company says that Compal and Pegatron will also help customers speed up the development of their products.

According to Pankaj Kedia, Global Business Head, Smart Wearables at Qualcomm,

At Qualcomm, 25 models across product segments are currently in the pipeline.
