M1 Pro Mac mini: Here is Everything you need to know

The Mac mini, which was released in 2005 and was the first BYODKM Mac (bring your own display, keyboard, and mouse), had the potential to become one of the most widely used Macintoshes ever produced when it was introduced. It hasn’t really lived up to its hype, as its specifications, prices, and performance have never quite reached the heights we expected, but we still think it’s a great option as an entry-level Mac nearly two decades later. It hasn’t really lived up to its hype.

Then, in March of 2022, Apple presented the Mac Studio, which put to rest rumors that the company planned to release an updated version of the Mac mini the following year. The Mac Studio, which shares a similar form factor but has a height that is approximately equivalent to that of three Mac minis stacked on top of each other, is also available. There is now a significant hole in the product line as there are no desktop Macs that offer the M1 Pro processor. The Mac Studio, which is an excellent computer, comes equipped with M1 Max and M1 Ultra processors (which is only found in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models).

There are people who use Macs who are holding out hope that Apple will improve the Mac mini by equipping it with the M1 Pro chip, and there is a Mac mini that appears to be ready for an update to the M1 Pro: Apple continues to offer for sale a Mac mini with an antiquated Intel processor for a price of $1,099 or £1,099. Apple had the opportunity to discontinue this model when it introduced the Mac Studio; however, it chose not to do so, which suggests that there is still a chance of an M1 Pro version of the Mac mini being released in the future. Indeed, there is evidence to suggest that an M1 Pro variant of the Mac mini will be released in the near future. Continue reading to learn when it is possible that the M1 Pro Mac mini will become available.

Nevertheless, there is a problem that cannot be ignored at this time: Apple debuted the M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro in June 2022 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Does this indicate that Apple will not release any more updates for the M1 in the future? Should we at this point be looking forward to an M2 Pro Mac mini? Or is it more likely that Apple will release a Mac mini M2? It is also anticipated that an M2 Mac mini will be released in 2022, possibly in the month of October.Apple debuted the M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro in June 2022 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

New design for the M1 Pro Mac mini

Since its introduction in 2005, the Mac mini has consistently featured a square form factor in its design. As time has passed, it has become thinner, it no longer has a CD drive, and it has changed colors. Based on renders, there are rumors that the next iteration of the Mac mini will be even more compact than its predecessor, which could bring its height down to less than an inch. On the other hand, these rumors about a more compact design appear to refer to the upcoming M2 version of the Mac mini.

Additional rumors about a larger Mac mini are obviously connected to Apple’s announcement of the Mac Studio in March of 2022. The Mac Studio appears to be a Mac mini when viewed from the top, but it is actually several inches taller than the Mac mini. Because of its larger form factor, the M1 Max and M1 Ultra can achieve the superior cooling that is required of them. To make room for the M1 Pro, would it be necessary for the Mac mini to be of a larger size? We don’t believe that to be the case because the chip functions normally in the MacBook Pro.

An account that claimed to be for analyst Ming-Cho Kuo tweeted in March 2022 that the 2023 Mac mini will have the same form and design as the model that is currently available.

It is likely that the new model will provide the same selection of ports as the Intel model that is currently available, including up to four Thunderbolt/USB-4 ports, two USB-A ports, ethernet, HDMI, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. At this time, Apple does not include a keyboard with the Mac mini; therefore, you will either need to provide your own keyboard or purchase one from Apple. It is highly unlikely that this will ever change, but Apple does provide the option to upgrade the M1 Mac mini with the brand new Apple keyboard that features Touch ID.

M1 Pro Mac mini: Processor

Even so, we continue to anticipate that Apple will present a successor to the Intel-powered Mac mini that will be powered by an M1 Pro chip. Although it has been reported that the company has been testing models with the M1 Max in addition to the M1 Pro, we do not anticipate seeing either the M1 Max or the M1 Ultra in it.

Now that the M2 has been released, there is a possibility that Apple will skip the M1 Pro in favor of going straight to the M2 Pro; however, it is unlikely that we will see that model until somewhere around the middle of 2023.

If Apple decides to go with an M1 Pro, we might see a CPU with 10 cores, up to 16 graphics cores, and as much as 32 gigabytes of RAM. Although we do not yet know the specifics of what an M2 Pro will provide, we anticipate that it will come with a greater number of CPU cores, additional graphics cores, and additional RAM.

M1 Pro Mac mini: Release date

We had high hopes that Apple would unveil a brand new M1 Pro Mac mini at WWDC 2022 to replace the Intel-powered model, but the company did not make this update. Even though the likelihood of the launch of the M1 Pro Mac mini has significantly decreased as a result of this, it is still possible. There is now a strong possibility that Apple will not release the M1 Pro version of the Mac mini and will instead go straight to the M2 Pro Mac mini for their next iteration of the Mac mini.

There is some circumstantial evidence to suggest that Apple may soon release an updated version of the Intel-powered Mac mini. In April 2022, a software developer by the name of Steven Troughton-Smith pointed out that the most recent software update for the Studio Display includes a reference to a Mac mini that is not yet on the market. Troughton-Smith initially hypothesized that “Macmini10,1” might refer to a new Mac mini equipped with an M2 processor; however, he later shifted his focus to the M1 Pro and M1 Max models instead.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported a couple of days after Troughton-tweet Smith’s that Apple is internally testing a Mac mini with an M1 Pro, codenamed J374, along with an M1 Max Mac mini, but it’s possible that this model won’t ship at all. Gurman also reported that Apple is testing an M1 Max Mac mini. He also indicated that Apple is testing a Mac mini with an M2 Pro chip, which has the codename J474, and an M2 Mac mini, which has the codename J473, both of which match the chip that Apple introduced at WWDC. The M2 Pro Mac mini has eight CPU cores and 10 GPU cores.

However, it’s possible that we won’t move until 2023. An analyst by the name of Ming-Chi Kuo predicted in March 2022 that a Mac mini would be released in 2023. However, he does not provide any specifics, and it is possible that the Mac mini that will be released in 2023 will be the M2 Mac mini.

M1 Pro Mac mini: Price

The base model of the Mac mini costs £699 or $699, and there is also a model with more storage that costs £899 or $899. The Intel model, which we anticipate will be replaced by a Pro version, has a starting price of $1,099 or £1,099.

With the introduction of the M1 Pro-powered model, it is possible that we will see a price increase in the near future. A price increase of this magnitude would have the effect of bringing it closer in price to the $1,999/£1,999 Mac Studio with M1 Max. If Apple wants to sell the Mac Studio to a particular audience, it won’t want to make the Mac mini an option that is too appealing to that audience.

The starting price of the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip is $1,999/£1,899, which is a full $500/£400 more than the most expensive M1 model. This could be a good place to look for clues as to how Apple might price the new Mac mini. In light of these price points, we anticipate that the M1 Pro Mac mini will have a starting price of either $1,399 or £1,399.
