
MediaTek has introduced the new Dimensity 1080 5G chipset, which succeeds the Dimensity 920 SoC from last year. There are several enhancements to consider, but camera upgrades are the most noticeable.
MediaTek Dimensity 1080 Specifications
- The MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chipset has an octa-core CPU structure and is based on a 6nm process technology.
- The system includes two Arm Cortex-A78 CPU cores with up to 2.6GHz clock speeds and six Arm Cortex-A55 cores with up to 2.0GHz clock speeds.
- The Dimensity 920, as previously stated, supported a clock speed of up to 2.5 GHz. The Mali-G88 GPU is responsible for graphics.
- The chipset supports LPDDR5 RAM as well as UFS 3.1 storage.
In terms of photography, phones equipped with the Dimensity 1080 chipset can include up to a 200MP main camera and support hardware-accelerated 4K HDR videos. The Imagiq Image Signal Processor (ISP) from MediaTek is capable of producing high-quality images and videos.

The MediaTek HyperEngine 3.0 is designed to improve gaming performance, while the MediaTek APU 3.0 will include a variety of AI tricks for cameras and efficient performance. The phones can support Full HD+ 120Hz displays with variable speeds to conserve energy. In addition, the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 SoC supports dual 5G SIM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth version 5.2, GLONASS, and the MediaTek 5G UltraSave power efficiency enhancement suite.
Availability
The MediaTek Dimensity 1080 chipset will be available on smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2022. There is no word yet on which phones will be powered by it.
