Microsoft is currently testing a new Photos app in Windows 11. Windows 11’s Photos app introduces a new photo-management experience and some much-requested features.
The update includes a beautiful gallery that simplifies browsing, finding, managing, and consuming your photo collection. It also makes it easy to back up your photos to OneDrive, have powerful experiences on Windows devices, and enjoy a fun “Memories” experience.
Windows 11’s new Photos app Highlights
- Organize your photos with a productive and beautifully redesigned purpose-built experience.
- Easily backup your Photos to OneDrive and keep your memories safe.
- Celebrate a life well-lived with improved “Memories” experiences.
- Be productive with multi-window and multi-screen.
- Easily view your OneDrive storage quota usage and add more storage.
- Import and manage your photos from external sources such as your phone and camera.

The current Photos app experience will be replaced by this update (version 2022.31090.16004.0 and higher). We introduced Clipchamp as our new inbox video editor earlier this year, with the goal of making video creation simple, fast, and enjoyable on Windows. Because Clipchamp includes all of the expected basic tools like trimming and splitting, as well as more pro-style features like transitions and animated text, the new Photos app experience does not include the legacy Video Editor. If you prefer to keep using the legacy Photos app, it will be available in the Microsoft Store.

It is currently rolling out a preview of this update to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel. This means that not all Insiders in the Dev Channel will receive the update right away, but the rollout will be phased in over time based on feedback.
