According to Insider Gaming, a future version of the Sony PlayStation 5 may include a detachable disc drive that will allow you to play games from a disc connected via USB-C. According to rumours, the new PS5 model will be released in September 2023. The PS5 is currently available in two versions: one with an integrated disc drive and one with a disc-incompatible “Digital Edition.” Sony may have made this decision to simplify their product selection in the future.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 may include a detachable disc drive
This means that even if you choose to save money when purchasing the PS5, given how expensive these game consoles have become in the last year, you will be able to update the device with a disc drive later on because it will be sold as a separate accessory. The PlayStation 5’s internals have undergone significant changes since its release in 2020. Early this year, the console received a new motherboard and cooling system, and a new version with a lighter heatsink began shipping in 2021.
Although the new console’s design is unknown, it may resemble the existing PS5 digital version with an additional USB Type C connector, given that it will not include a disc drive as standard. According to the report, the next console will have “nearly identical hardware.” Given the release date of late 2023, we will learn more about this new PlayStation 5 update in the coming months.
