As part of a new verification process on Twitter, users will be able to apply for the much-coveted “blue tick.” After dumping the program in 2017, they decided to re-allow applications for the blue tick after a four-year hiatus.
According to the company, giving users a “blue badge” was a way for the social media giant to help users distinguish authentic, trustworthy accounts.
“One of the ways we help people distinguish the authenticity of accounts that are of high public interest is through the blue badge,” they explained.
“It gives people on Twitter more context about who they’re talking to on Twitter so they can figure out if it’s trustworthy, which our research shows lead to healthier, more informed conversations,” says the author.
In the future, the social media behemoth says it will add more categories, including ones for scientists, academics, and religious leaders.
Those interested in applying should see a verification tab appear under the “Account Settings” tab of their profile in the coming days.
Who’s eligible for a blue tick?
To be verified, you must meet the requirements of one of the six categories listed below:
- Companies, brands, and organizations
- News organizations and journalists
- Sports and gaming
- Activists, organizers, and other influential individuals
However, Twitter cautioned that these guidelines may not apply to all types of accounts eligible for verification. As a result, the company plans to add more categories in the future, such as those for scientists, religious leaders, and academics. However, the company has not stated when these new categories will be available.
Twitter will continue to evaluate and improve its new verification policy over time.
How to get verified on Twitter?
The new verification procedure is straightforward. Applications will be reviewed as long as you are eligible, and it can be done directly from your account. Users simply need to go to their account’s Accounts Settings tab and select the Verification Form option. The update is being rolled out in stages, so it may not reach all users at the same time.
“You can expect an emailed response from us within a few days after submitting your application, but this could take up to a few weeks depending on how many open applications are in our queue. If your application is approved, the blue badge will appear on your profile automatically. If you believe we made a mistake, you have 30 days to reapply after receiving our decision on your application, according to the company’s blog post.
