WhatsApp comes to Wear OS 3 with a new native app and voice note features in beta

WhatsApp has begun testing new software for different WearOS 3 smartwatches, including the Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 5, Fossil Gen 6, and others.

Following the installation of the current beta version for Android, the messaging app is now functional on Wear OS.

WhatsApp for Wear OS: Features

  • Contacts: On the main screen, you can see a simple list of your recent contacts as well as choices to access the settings or start the app on your phone.
  • Conversations: You can scroll through your previous messages and respond through voice or the system keyboard. It is also possible to see when someone is typing or online.
  • Group chats: From your watch, you can join or create group conversations and check who is in the conversation by scrolling to the bottom. You can also send media or stickers by opening the group chat on your phone.

Enter an eight-digit code from your watch into the phone app to activate the app. After that, your chats will sync safely between devices, with end-to-end encryption intact thanks to multi-device features.

You can use a circular complication to check the number of unread messages and “WhatsApp contacts” to swiftly contact someone. “WhatsApp voice message” allows you to begin recording audio immediately.

To use WhatsApp on your smartwatch, download the newest WhatsApp beta for Android as a beta tester from the Google Play Store or download the APK here. Check that your phone and watch are running version or later.

If the app does not display in the on-watch Play Store, you can install it from the app list on your phone. It should be noted that the WhatsApp Business app is not yet accessible on smartwatches.
