WhatsApp to Soon Enable Texting Without Sharing Phone Numbers
Recently, the company introduced Chat Lock and partnered with Truecaller to combat spam calls. Now, it appears that WhatsApp is working on an upcoming feature that could revolutionise how users connect with each other by introducing usernames.
In the most recent beta version of the app, 2.23.11.15, which is currently available on the Google Play Store, WABetaInfo found this exciting feature. According to the website, while the capability to create a username has been uncovered, it is not yet accessible and is currently under development. Presumably, usernames will offer an additional layer of privacy to users, allowing them to choose between sharing their phone number or username when connecting with others.
Based on the screenshot of the feature, each username will be unique, making it an ideal method for sharing and receiving contact information. Currently, WhatsApp relies on QR codes or phone numbers for this purpose, but the introduction of usernames could present a fresh way for users on the platform to exchange such details.
Although not confirmed, the website speculates that users might also be able to search for others using their usernames. However, once usernames are launched and given their uniqueness, there might be a rush to claim one’s preferred handle in the beginning.
