Toyota, Planning to launch Ertiga-based MPV in Next Month

Toyota is gearing up to launch a new MPV in India, which will be based on the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. This will be the third rebadged product from the partnership between Toyota and Maruti, after the Glanza (based on Baleno) and the Urban Cruiser (based on Vitara Brezza). The Toyota version of the Ertiga is expected to debut on next month and could be called Rumion, as per a leaked image of the grille design. The Rumion name has already been trademarked by Toyota in India.

Rumion Platform & Engine Specs:

The Rumion will share the same platform, engine and features as the Ertiga, but will have some cosmetic changes to differentiate it from its Maruti counterpart. The most noticeable change will be the front fascia, which will sport a three-slat grille with the Toyota logo and possibly new headlamps and bumper. The side and rear profile are likely to remain unchanged, except for the badges. The interior of the Rumion will also be similar to the Ertiga, with a seven-seat configuration and a dual-tone dashboard. The upholstery and trim could be different, and Toyota might offer some additional features such as a sunroof or wireless charging to justify a premium over the Ertiga.

The Rumion will be powered by the same 1.5-litre K-series petrol engine that produces 103 BHP and 138 Nm of torque. It will also come with a 12V mild-hybrid system that improves fuel efficiency and performance. The transmission options will include a five-speed manual gearbox and a four-speed torque converter automatic.

The Rumion will compete with the Mahindra Marazzo in the MPV segment, which is currently dominated by the Ertiga. It will also fill the gap in Toyota’s portfolio, which does not have an MPV under Rs. 10 lakh. The Rumion is expected to be priced slightly higher than the Ertiga, which starts from Rs. 8.64 lakh (ex-showroom).

The launch of the Rumion will be followed by another rebadged product from Toyota, which will be based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx. The Fronx is a sub-4 metre SUV coupe that was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2020.

Toyota Taisor Engine Specs:

Toyota’s version of the Fronx could be called Taisor, which is another name that has been trademarked by Toyota in India. The Taisor is likely to be launched by Diwali 2023.
